I want to create hand made textiles for use in the home or on the body
that have a fine art quality, bringing the textural elements of painting and
sculptural shapes onto fabric. I have always drawn inspiration from fine
artists, artists such as Patrick Heron, Howard Hodgkin, and Barbara
Hepworth who have been a huge influence in my work, from their use of
colour to shape.
I am constantly looking at how I can balance bold shapes, strong colour
and unusual textures. At the beginning of any design I will start by
creating textures in black and white using various materials from paint
to charcoal to cutting shapes from paper. Starting this way and working
with these sorts of materials reminds me of where my influences have
come from. I want to keep that energy I see in abstract painting and
sculpture in my designing. I then use these textures to create my
designs by either manipulating them on a computer or simply laying my
different papers together, always looking towards my fine art
inspiration for composition ideas and balance.
I enjoy exploring different ways of creating my designs from
digital to screen printing.
I have always strived to create fabrics which I am passionate about that
will stand the test of time rather than the throw away fabrics we see so
much of today.
